Sir Pierre van Ryneveld High School has a very active and successful drama department, participating in many festivals and competitions.
SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS OF PERFORMING ARTS
This prestigious competition enables learners to perform in acting, vocal, dance, instrumental and modelling against the best performers in South Africa and enables your child to develop and showcase his/her talents.
This is the only competition that enables participants to represent South Africa at the World Championships of Performing Arts. Their mission is to have contestants who excel in the performing arts industry to compete on an international level. SPvR has proudly participated since 2015. Numerous learners of SPvR were awarded with Gauteng colours (Black blazers) by the department of Arts and Culture after performing at the Showcase of Champions at the Mosaiek theatre.
In 2019, 28 learners were chosen for Team SA after performing at National level in Rustenburg. They obtained 216 gold medals, 72 silver medals and 40 bronze medals for group performances as well as 8 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze medals for solo performances. Mrs Janse van Rensburg was awarded with an achievement award for coaching learners for the Championships of Performing Arts for 15 consecutive years. SPvR has also participated in the Arts section on a national level, under the excellence guidance of the talented and passionate, Mr M.Mello, the art educator at the school. They obtained 6 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
FESTIVAL OF FAME
The Grade 10-12 Drama learners have the opportunity to attend the Festival of Fame at the National School of the Arts in Braamfontein. The programme will inspire learners and enrich their knowledge and love for the arts, while also supporting much of their classroom learning.
DRAMA CONFERENCE
The Grade 12 Drama Learners have the opportunity to attend a Drama Conference yearly at Greenside High. They will be issued with a workbook which will include the content of their Grade 12 work. Many helpful theory and practical techniques will be covered, including lecturers on their prescribed plays.
OP DIE PLANKE TONEELFEES AND MONOLOGUE NATIONAL FESTIVAL
Sir Pierre van Ryneveld competes in this one-act, mini play and monologue festival where learners can develop and showcase their acting, directing and technical skills. SPvR excelled in this competition by being honourably awarded on national level with pins, trophies, certificates and medals. In 2019, SPVR proudly competed with four productions on national level. The mini-play “doomsday”, written and directed by Mpho Moloi obtained 1st place, “Have you seen Zandile?” directed by Buhle and Zinhle Lekgoathi obtained 2nd place. SPvR also received the following awards: Zinhle Lekgoathi – best actress, Mpho Moloi – best actor and best stage manager, KagisoTladi – best supporting actor,Silindokuhle Dlamini – best supporting actress, Buhle and Zingle Lekgoathi best directors, Vuyo Magwentshu – best sound and lighting manager and Boitumelo Moabelo best lighting manager. Koketso Moremi won the Grade 12 monologue section and Mpho Moloi was runner up.
SEGARONA FESTIVAL
In 2019, Sir Pierre learners entered the Segarona Festival hosted by the Gauteng Department of Education. The contemporary dance group coached by Mpho Moloi proudly represented SPvR and Ekurhuleni North at the Gauteng Finals. Sir Pierre van Ryneveld learners namely, Phofu Setwaba( informal poetry), Lesedi Langa (formal poetry) , Tsalai Phiri and Kayla Baloyi( Public speaking) also represented Ekurhuleni North at the Gauteng Finals. SPVR will enter numerous talented SPVR learners.
