Debating gives learners an opportunity to practise speaking in front of an audience and thinking on their feet. Learners who participate in debate show initiative and leadership. It also enhances general knowledge as they have to continuously familiarise themselves with current events and controversial affairs in order to prepare for debates. In 2019, two of Sir Pierre’s teams participated at the University of Johannesburg’s LGBT debate. The members won numerous awards: Kefilwe Nkosi (1st place), Lesedi Langa (3rd place), Buyiswa Twala (1st place), Mpho Moloi (2nd Place), Phofu Setwaba (4th Place) and Motheo Mofokeng(1st place). In 2019, Sir Pierre’s team comprising of Mpho Moloi, Tshegofatso Motsepe, Tshepiso Kadiaka and Lethabo Mamafha and the additional members namely Tshepo Modika, Precious Nyirena, Koketso Moremi and Lesedi Langa obtained 3rd place on district level. UN DEBATE
The UN debates are based on a simulation of the United Nations general assembly. Participating teams must consist of four members (2 from a resourced and 2 from an under-resourced school). Thirty teams per province participate in this debate, which aim to develop communication skills such as the written preparation of arguments, oral presentations, negotiation and reaching a working compromise. SPVR has participated in this event since 2011, when Patrick and Nelisiwe Mabena (SPVR) and Jaco Janse van Rensburg and Angelique Koster (Maranatha) represented Germany. Learners are encouraged to participate in this worthy event,Coach and co-ordinator: L. Janse van Rensburg
